Fire Safety in the Home – In Style

//"firesafety"Fire extinguishers are small and handy life-savers that can mean the difference in a burned home or a saved one. They come in many types (four actually), so for the home, selecting the one that would be most effective (normally type ABC) for dry, electrical and oil-based fires is the best choice. They are however quite ugly, being brightly colored so having them and having them subsist with you inside the home without being ugly is a good idea to consider when renovating your home, They should be placed in the most accessible areas such as the kitchen, garage, above the stairs and below and simple yet beautiful cabinets with some custom labels that can be made using a router to indicate their existence can make them less of an eyesore. Stored in cabinets, they are hidden from view but are still within reach should you need them. If you love to work on your car at home or do a lot of cooking, select a sizable one that can handle most fires.

Baking soda in the kitchen and garage is also a good fire safety tool for as it burns it releases carbon dioxide which removes one part of the fire triangle, oxygen. For stove fires involving fat or grease, never use water for it would result in a flash over with the oil boiling over and causing a huge fireball. Use the pot lid or baking soda instead to smother the fire, making sure to evacuate the house as a safety precaution. It would also be a good idea to have one of those roll-up ladders in the top floor of a home that is more than one story high to allow escape from that level should the fire cut you off from your escape route. Plan ahead and practice your plan with all the family members present giving each one a role to get them to participate. Fire kills and burns a lot of homes around the world each and every year, hopefully with these safety precautions you can prevent your home and family from joining the statistics of victims. Keep safe, be safe.
